Windsor’s drastically changing weather can take a toll on your heating and cooling units. Here are some simple HVAC maintenance tips you can do to keep your systems running all year long.
Check the Filters
Changing the air filters in your systems each month ensures that no dirt or dust will affect the functionality of your HVAC system. Clean air filters will help your unit run more efficiently as well as trap more bacteria and allergens to help keep the air in your home cleaner. When checking your filter, make sure to note the amount of dust that has accumulated. Are there smokers living in your home? Pets? Does anyone living in the home have any allergies? These are some considerations you should take into account when replacing your filters. These can help determine how often you should be cleaning or replacing the filters to ensure your unit is running smoothly.
Check the Condenser
Where its outside near the unit, or near the vents in your home, be sure to keep the area around your unit and vents clear of debris. Picking up leaves or debris around the unit will help increase the airflow of your system and help keep it clean. When cleaning the outdoor unit, be sure to turn off the unit before cleaning to ensure safety and to make sure no dirt or debris enters the system as you are cleaning. Here are some simple steps you can follow to clean your outdoor unit thoroughly:
- Find the electrical disconnect (a metal box) near your outside unit. Open the box and find the switch that turns off the air conditioner. Turn the switch to the “off” position.
- Use a water hose to clean off any loose debris (grass leaves, etc.) on the outside unit.
- Spray the outside unit with coil cleaner (You can purchase this product from more hardware stores).
- Wait 10-15 minutes as the cleaner foams and bonds with the dirt on the coils.
- Rinse the coil cleaner off with the hose.
